First, if you live in the United States, you must find out if placing a traffic sign or signal in this location is appropriate. They are not supposed to install a traffic sign or signal anyplace they want. There is a regulation they must follow. Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) – FHWA. Find out when the next city counsel meeting is. Make your request there. You must sell this idea to the city counsel first. Your stop light may not happen overnight. They may decide to call in a traffic engineer to do a traffic study first. If you can convince the city counsel to approve the traffic light you will have one in a matter of days.

One last thing to consider. If the street that would be getting this traffic light is on a county or state road this complicates things. It is not as easy to get a traffic light installed on one of these roads, but not impossible either.

I recently had to deal with a similar issue with a stop sign in my home town.

Ask your town engineer and/or police chief if the intersection has ever been studied..

If it has, find out the last time it was and request a new study.

If it has not, make your argument to the engineer and the town council why a study is warranted.

A traffic light will only be installed if the intersection meets at least one of these criteria:

*Excessive volume in eight- and four-hour periods.

*Rush-hour congestion.

*Pedestrian delays.

*School crossing hazards.

*Traffic flow problems.

*History of collisions.

Once the study is completed, and if the intersection meets one of these criteria, a request can be made by the town to the state Department of Transportation, which will make the final decision.
