Also, you cut Stallworth…If I remember right. A 2nd tier reciever with great speed. The Eagles are about drafting their talent and keeping the check book as closed as they can for as long as possible.

I read a side report on the Kansas City Star website about having 1 or 2 top tier wide recievers. It made the point, through pure statistical facts, that having 1 top tier WR got you into the 45-59% winning range on avg. — But, having 2 top tier recievers put their teams in the 60% (+) range, in terms of winning.

Steelers — 2 top tier WR’s
Giants — 2 (until today… Plaxico is out!)
Colts — 2
Patriots — 2
Cowboy’s — 2
Jet’s — 2
Chargers — 1.5 (maybe 2)

You get the idea… and maybe you’ll get Tony Gonzalez as draft day comes closer and the chiefs look for a 2nd round choice after giving up theirs for Matt Cassel.

Anywhoo…remember that time when Andy Reid was still coaching in Green Bay, and Sterling Sharpe went down? Brett Frave spread the ball around to all the remaining receivers and they still had a successful season. Andy Reid is stuck in that time. He seems to think that’s the answer to all offensive woes. Now we let big play guys slip through our fingers to rival teams. It’s so frustrating. The proof is in the stats…with a big play guy, we were 13-3 and made the SB. McNabb still has more TD passes to TO than he does to any other receiver…

I was shocked last year when the Eagles actually drafted Desean Jackson. Thought he would make a huge impact, but has not yet.

You do have to admit that McNabb and Westbrook can carry the team…but wouldn’t it be a lot easier if they had a great number 1 WR.

Reid preaches a system that promotes spreading the ball around, and creative multiple WR sets. He schemes and gameplans to attack weaknesses of defenses by creating surprising mismatches. Obviously, having a great WR can make life much easier for a QB, but McNabb is good enough, and Reid is a good enough gameplanner that the Eagles have found plenty of success by using guys who aren’t any better than 2nd or 3rd receivers (if even that!). Donovan McNabb is a perfect fit for this type of system as he spreads the ball around, and will typically find the guy who is beating the defense on that particular day.

Now factor in that the Eagles are one of the most frugal teams in the league, and they rarely will sign aging players. Most of those receivers you mentioned were either aging or not entirely proven. The cap-concious Eagles wouldn’t ever risk overpaying for a WR, which is a position Reid has shown he can be successful without. They also tend to be very big tightwads when it comes to dealing picks – unless they’re dealing for more picks or to move up in the draft, they rarely give up early draft picks, which most teams want when giving up a receiver. Even think about TO’s signing – the Eagles got one of the top 3 WR’s in the league for a bargain price. If TO wasn’t an idiot, he never would have been kicked out of San Fran, and if he did end up leaving there, the Eagles never would have shelled out the money for him.

It’s kind of a perfect storm of fiscal frugalty, unwillingness to take risks, the players available, and Reid believing he can get similar production for less money. It’s easy to understand McNabb’s frustration with the lack of a true #1 as his receivers typically lead the league (or are very near the top) in drops, and even are caught running the wrong routes a few times a game. I think if they’re going to make a move on a WR via a blockbuster trade, this is the year they do it.
