Do I have a chance to get into NYU?

Scores: I’m 17, and a junior at a large high school (833 students in my graduating class). I’m ranked 153, which puts me at top 18%. My SAT score is a 2240 (770 writing, 760 math, 710 reading). My weighted GPA is a 3.36, but my unweighted GPA is 3.76. I’m very likely a National Merit Finalist (219 on PSAT in Texas).

Community Service: I volunteered twice a week at the local hospital from October to May (about four hrs a week) and will volunteer at the same hospital throughout the summer (about 8 hrs a week) and all throughout senior year. (Memorial Hermann Katy, in case you’re wondering)

Courseload: I’ve taken multiple medically related courses, and by the end of senior year I will have taken 10 AP classes. I’ve always take Pre-AP courses when offered (since the sixth grade).

Extracurriculars: I’m in Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, and the National Spanish Honor Society, as well as the official volunteering club at my school (I volunteer for all of these, tutoring sporadically, etc.) and I’m a two-time president of the school’s medical organization (Future Health Professionals of America/Health Occupation Students of America). I was on a team of four that won a UIL state championship in Current Events. I play basketball at the YMCA, and I write mystery novels in my spare time.

My unweighted is higher because I got a B or two in some electives. Foreign language, I think. Most of my core classes are A’s.

Also, pertaining to the reputation of my school, I go to Seven Lakes High School in Katy, Tx. It’s a very good public school, and it was ranked 413th in the nation out of 27,000 schools by NewsWeek.

1. Is it possible for your weighted GPA to be lower than your unweighted? I mean surely it could have been an error with 10 AP’s.I’d believe if you had a 4.36 or even a 5.36

2. Your Extracurriculars are very impressive, especially since you have 1 year left in high school.

3. Your SAT scores are almost unbelievable

4. You’re in the top 18% of your class and now is the time to boost your grades a bit higher, you see seniors are going to blow off next year like it doesn’t exist, so use that to your advantage and raise your class rank.

5. Make sure got good AP scores for the right classes, some AP’s don’t count for anything especially when you get to the major league college.

6. Finally, I bet you have better qualifications than half the students in the school now, but remember it’s a goal not a guarantee, KEEP YOUR OPTIONS OPEN. Trust me you can go far

URGENT! I need some advice about my best friend situation.PLEASE HELP!?

I need some real advice. So I’ve been friends with my best friend for seven years (since 7th grade). We’ve been really close been through plenty of family drama and friend drama and remained extremely close friends. Told each other everything went everywhere together spent a ton of time together. We were practically conjoined. Then I start talking to this guy I really like. And after awhile we decide we want to hang out together alone. She had her concerns because we were going to be at his house alone and she and one of my other friends thought he might take advantage of me. I thought it was kind of irrational considering he went to our high school and my family knew where I was going I had my phone on me. I’m not saying it was completely out of the realm of possibilities I’m just saying it was unlikely. So I ended up telling him about this. And he kinda just shrugged it off. She however read my text messages and then blew up at me about how I saw talking about her and making fun of her. Yes we did laugh about it but it was an awkward situation of course we laughed about it. So we were fighting and then eventually she got over it. I ended hanging out with the guy I liked and then eventually we start going out. This is my first boyfriend since we’ve been friends. And then different things we start pissing her off. So we’ve been fighting on again off again huge screaming matches. It’s been driving my family insane. But she is my best friend so I try to hear her out even when I think she is just completely wrong. This has been going on for about 4 months now. She’ll start these huge fights usually about absolutely nothing and sometimes she tries to stop being friends with me all together. She doesn’t like it when I hang out with a mutual friend without her and she gets pissed when I hang out with my boyfriend and even my sister. I’ve confronted her about it and she has been working on it and the fights had gotten less frequent. Then we went down with some friends to the lake to take a little vacation since it’s summer. And everything was great we had a lot of fun doing all kinds of different things. Until the day before we were supposed to leave. We went out earlier that day and then came back to the house for lunch and I was making lunch and we were gonna chill and put on a movie. And I was tired because I hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before. And then she starts throwing a tantrum because apparently I had been a mopey bitch all weekend and I was acting like I wasn’t enjoying myself. And she blows this whole thing out of proportion and she was the one who drove down their and she tried to pack up her stuff and leave us there without any other way of getting home. So I wasn’t about to get left there and I wasn’t going to listen to her scream at me anymore either. So I called my sister and I had her come pick me up. As I was leaving she told me to have a nice life and to go F myself. I thought she would get over it like she always does but she ended up deleting not only but my entire family from facebook and she deletes me as her friend on xbox live without saying a word to me. So I was under the impression we weren’t friends anymore. A few days later she calls me up wanting to talk. And I told her I wasn’t ready to talk to her. And she says I was the one who just walked away from our friendship. and she just deleted me to get perspective and such. I just told her I wasn’t ready to talk to her and have left it alone for a few days. My question is should I continue being friends with her? I care for her a lot but all this fighting is wearing me down. I mean she has been my best friend forever and we’ve been through so much together. I don’t want to stop being friends with her but she has really hurt me and I don’t know how much of the fighting over nothing I can take. Any advice on what to do would help me out a lot. Please. Thank you.

Honestly, it sounds like she needs to grow up. First, it sounds like she is jealous of you for dating a guy. A lot of girls get jealous when they have a friend who gets a boyfriend and starts spending time with someone else, besides them. She needs to learn you can’t just be single all of your life. Second, if she is going to be jealous of you for hanging out with your SISTER, there’s a problem. It kind of sounds like she just want you to herself, and can’t stand the thought of your attention going to other people. Also, if she is going to go through the trouble of deleting you AND your family off of Fb, then I personally don’t think she wants to be friends any longer. She sounds a little confused about your friendship, like she can’t make up her mind if she wants to be friends or not. I think you are right to back away and evaluate the friendship for yourself. She sounds like a jealous and rather immature person. And she’s wrong…I think…for saying you walked away from the friendship. It definitely sounds like to me, she is the one who walked away first. I think you should think about where you see your friendship going, i.e do you think you’ll still be friends in college, adulthood, do you even want to remain friends that long? I had a friend who I thought I’d be friends with until we were 80, but we haven’t talked since high school because a similar situation happened. Now that I look back, I’m actually glad we’re not friends any longer. I’ve grown up a lot quicker and more maturely than she did, and I’ve made a zillion friends since then. I feel like she really held me back in high school. Maybe you should take certain things like I said into consideration. Also, I would think about if your families are close, how it will effect them. Good luck, and these types of situations aren’t ever easy. Sometimes you feel like you’ve made the best decision, whatever it is, and you realize later you did. Or, sometimes you wish you had ended the friendship sooner, instead of carrying it out for so long, like I did. I wish I had done so sooner, because I feel like I would have been able to spend time with other friends instead of always feeling obligated to hang out with her.

Do you think it is fair for illegal aliens to be demanding free college educations in Oregon?

SALEM — Passionate citizens told Oregon lawmakers Wednesday that giving some undocumented immigrants in-state university tuition would reward lawbreakers and harm a cash-strapped state. Others told their elected officials that they have an opportunity to take a stand on a basic issue of fairness.

Lawmakers on the House Rules Committee heard more than two hours of public testimony Wednesday on one of the most emotion-packed issues facing legislators this year: a proposal to allow illegal immigrants who attended high school in Oregon to pay in-state tuition at public universities.

“What the bill would allow is contrary to what our country stands for,” said Don Nash of Lake Oswego.

The committee has not scheduled a vote on Senate Bill 742, which passed the Senate in March with support from all 15 Democrats who were present and three Republicans.

“It’s not my fault my parents brought me here,” said 14-year-old Alicio Reyes, who was brought to the United States from Mexico when he was 3. “I’m just a kid who’s smart enough to know I want to go to college someday.”

At least one member of each political party must sign on to advance the bill out of the House committee, which is evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats. Its prospects in the committee are uncertain, but proponents could call for a vote of the full House if they can show they have enough support to pass it.

The measure would require universities to charge in-state tuition to illegal immigrants who attended at least five years of school in the United States, at least three of them in Oregon. They must be dependent on another adult for support and apply to college within three years of receiving a GED or diploma.

The in-state tuition would be good for up to five years at one of seven universities governed by the State Board of Higher Education. Students would be required to attest that they have applied for legal residency — a provision aimed at ensuring they’re eligible to work in the United States after they receive a degree.

Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp?

Alright, my mom and private lesson teacher are making me go to Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp this summer.
I do not want to go.
I want to know what it’s like there, and if it’s like what band camps are brought out to be.
Is there sex? Is there alcohol? Are there drugs?
I do not want to associate myself with any of that.
I need to know fast before my mom pays the remaining balance of my tuition.
Please don’t give me bull poop answers like all the reviews were.
I want to know what it’s REALLY like there.

I’m going for clarinet/bass clarinet.
My unit assignment is Sleepy Hollow.
My cabin assignment is Sibelius.
I’m going to Session II(July 13-24, 2011)
I was given a $475 scholarship.
My mom has paid the $200 deposit included in the $1108 tuition.
I have played clarinet for seven years.
I’m good at Bb clarinet, but I have a better sound out of bass clarinet.
I’ll probably be placed in their Wind Ensemble or Orchestra wind section.
I’ll be a senior in high school next year.
I go to The School for Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati.

Well, straight up, I should tell you that I’ve never gone myself. BUT I am a huge music geek and I have close friends who have gone many time. First of all,it’s not at ALL like it’s depicted Secret Life Of The American Teenager. Nobody comes home pregnant from band camp. It’s mostly music-and-arts focused people who go there, and they go to spend the summer working on their art, not impregnating girls. It’s good that you don’t want to get involved in drugs, alcohol, etc., but I assure you that there won’t be any there anyways. I’ve never been to Blue Lake but I’ve gone to similar summer camps, and it’s a ton of fun. Everyone is very supportive and focused, but they still have lots of fun at the same time. There’s campfire sessions and shows and all sorts of great things.
