Anyone know what the difference is? I’m looking for a first bmx and im not sure why some have bigger size sprockets.
Bigger sprockets usually come on cheaper bikes, or really old bikes. Functionally, smaller sprockets have more clearance for grinding and dropping in to quarters, they’re also harder to get your pants stuck in. Really small ones, though, (25-9 and 22-8) aren’t as smooth, and put a lot more stress on the chain, which is why racers still use big sprockets.
Pretty much all full sized stock BMX bikes have about the same gear ratio (2.75:1), regardless of the size of the sprocket, since they put a smaller rear sprocket (or driver/freewheel/cog). The standard gearing for stock bikes used to be 44-16 (2.75:1 gear ratio) but it’s been going down 33-12 (2.75:1), 25-9(2.777:1) etc.
BTW, the gear ratio calculated by dividing the number of teeth on the sprocket by the number of teeth on the driver.
For example 44/16 = 11/4 = 2 3/4 = 2.75
